Equalities in schools

Equalities is generally about making sure that people are treated fairly and are given fair chances. There are 6 key equality strands which we work to:- race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion/belief and age, each supported by British and/or European Legislation.

Within Children's Services this means that we work towards ensuring that pupils, parents/carers, teachers, governors, support staff, social workers etc are treated equally in terms of employment and in the services they receive. Equality is not about treating everyone the same as people have different needs.

Key activities include:-

  • Focusing Children's Services policy towards redressing the inequalities experienced by disadvantaged groups
  • Engaging communities in the achievement debate and the development of Children's Services policy
  • Supporting schools and the LA in being compliant with legal duties related to equal opportunities
  • Ensuring Children's Services works in accordance with corporate equalities and community policies
