What is a Statement of Special Educational Needs?

A Statement of Special Educational Needs is a legal document which describes clearly the nature and severity of your child's difficulties and the implication of those difficulties for the child's learning needs in the context of a classroom.

It sets out the main educational objectives to be achieved by the special educational provision over the life of the statement.

The statement will also specify the special educational provision considered necessary to meet your child's learning difficulties or disability.

You will be given the opportunity to identify the school you would like your child to attend and if the Local Authority (LA) agrees with this choice, this school will be named in the statement as the school that your child should attend.
