Portrait of a CityPORTRAIT OF A CITY; NOTTINGHAM NAMES AND FACES FROM THE 1500s TO 2010
26 JUNE - 19 SEPTEMBER 2010

People make a place, shape its landscape and architecture and fire its economy. They give it the life and character to make it unique. Nottingham is the vibrant city we see in 2010 because of its contribution over centuries of many people, some famous; some as yet, unsung heroes. 'Portrait of a City' brings these faces to the fore, through paintings, photographs, sculpture and drawings and celebrates the role that people have played in making Nottingham.

Includes portraits from the National Portrait Gallery, from Nottingham City Museums and Galleries' collection, alongside newly-commissioned photographs by Jo Metson Scott. Jo is a Nottingham-born contemporary photographer who works on international commissions for publications such as the Guardian, Telegraph, and i-D Magazine. For 'Portrait of a City' has created new portraits of Nottingham people who contribute something special to the life of the city.

Bear Jugs and Ale MugsBEAR JUGS AND ALE MUGS; NOTTINGHAM SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE 1690-1800
UNTIL 7 NOVEMBER 2010
MEZZANINE GALLERY

In the 18th Century, Nottingham had a thriving pottery industry. The town was famous throughout the country for its lustrous finely made brown pots, often inscribed with people's names. This interesting exhibition is based on the Castle's own collection, along with public and private loans. It looks at the potteries, the potters, what they made and who they made it for. Pots range from mugs to novelties in the form of bears. A ragne of related archaeological material found in the City is also on display.

This visual exhibition devoted to Nottingham stoneware is the first in 30 years and illustrates why Nottingham has an important place in the history of ceramics.
